Hiking on the Wild Coast

Take the customs path and let yourself be exhilarated by the sea spray and the granite landscapes.

TL;DR (The essentials in 3 points)

  • Category: Activity / Discovery in La Baule
  • Summary: Take the customs path and let yourself be exhilarated by the sea spray and the granite landscapes.
  • Recommendation: Ideal for your next holidays on the Atlantic coast.

If the large beach of La Baule is the kingdom of fine sand, the Wild Coast (CĂŽte Sauvage), which stretches from Le Pouliguen to Le Croisic, is that of granite and rock. Facing due west, this portion of the coast offers grandiose and tormented landscapes, constantly reshaped by the force of waves and winds.

The Customs Path (GR34)

The best way to discover this coastline is to take the famous GR34, the old customs path. This steep path winds as close as possible to the cliffs, offering vertiginous views of the boiling ocean below. At each bend, the landscape changes: secret coves and stone needles standing facing the waves.

Breton caves and legends

The Wild Coast is also a land of legends. As you walk, you will come across geological curiosities with evocative names. The most famous is the Korrigans Cave, these little prankster elves from Breton folklore who are said to have found refuge there. At sunset, the walk becomes purely magical.
